A feline species resembling small black cats with yellow eyes, the Kitlings were bred on the decaying planet of the Cheetah People. They had the ability to transport themselves through space in order to seek out prey for the Cheetahs - prey which they could transport back to the planet. The Cheetah people were telepathically linked to the Kitlings and could see through their eyes.
They were basically scavengers, who lived off the scraps which the Cheetahs left behind.
Both the Doctor and Ace were transported to the planet from the suburb of Perivale, where the Cheetahs were hunting. They were being manipulated by the Master, who was becoming transformed into a Cheetah Person himself.
When the planet broke up, the Kitlings and the Cheetah People transported themselves to a new home to carry on the hunt.

- The Kitlings were realised on location by the use of real black cats, which did not behave themselves very well, and a rather un-lifelike animatronic model.
