On This Day... 7th August

Amongst today's birthdays we have that of popular comedy actor Alexei Sayle. He turns 70.
Just before playing the DJ in Revelation of the Daleks, he wrote an article stating why he ought to have been cast as the Doctor instead of Colin Baker. The piece was titled "Why I Should Have Been The New Doctor Who: The Case For A Marxist In The TARDIS".
He shares his birthday with the following:
Wayne Knight (Torchwood: Miracle Day) is 67. He has featured in some major Hollywood movies, such as the first Jurassic Park film.
Shobna Gulati (Yaz's mother Najia) is 56.
Eugene Washington (Mr Wagner in School Reunion) is 48.
And Chloe Ashcroft (best known for Play School and Play Away, but who also featured as Professor Laird in Resurrection of the Daleks) is 80 today.

The producer of those Chloe Ashcroft children's series was Cynthia Felgate, and coincidentally we remember her husband Ric Felgate today. He died 1999, aged 66.
He featured in three Doctor Who stories - all directed by his brother-in-law Michael Ferguson. He was journalist Roy Stone in the opening episode of The War Machines, technician Brent in The Seeds of Death, and astronaut Van Lyden in The Ambassadors of Death. In the latter he also played one of the space-suited alien ambassadors.
Norman Atkyns also passed away on this date - in 1980, aged 71. He was the Guardian of the Doomsday Weapon in Colony in Space, and the naval commander in the location work for The Sea Devils (both stories directed by Michael E Briant).
We also lost director Michael Kerrigan in 2014, aged 61. He helmed Battlefield and two of The Sarah Jane Adventures - Day of the Clown and Secrets of the Stars.
Tragically, Dursley McLinden - Mike Smith in Remembrance of the Daleks - was only 30 when he died in 1995.
