On This Day... 12th May

Only one episode of Doctor Who has ever made its debut on May 12th, and that is the final instalment of Planet of the Daleks in 1973.
This introduced the huge black and gold Supreme Dalek - a prop owned by Terry Nation which had seen service in the Daleks movies and the Curse of the Daleks stage play. Sadly it never appeared in the series again.

Today we wish Catherine Tate a very happy 54th birthday. She first appeared as Donna Noble in the 2006 Christmas Special - The Runaway Bride - before becoming the full-time companion for Series 4. She then featured in David Tennant's final story - The End of Time.

We also remember two of the Hartnell era composers, who both passed away on this date.
Norman Kay wrote the music for the very first story, An Unearthly Child, as well as The Keys of Marinus and The Sensorites. He died in 2001, aged 72.
Humphrey Searle composed the music for The Myth Makers - one of the most distinctive soundtracks of the era. He died in 1982, aged 66.
