Russian member of the Bowie Base One team, who were the first colonists on the planet Mars. His role was as the team's nurse. He was a bit of a joker, using a solar panel to make a "No Trespassers" sign.
When colleague Maggie Cain was attacked by two of her teammates who had become infected with an alien pathogen, Yuri placed her in quarantine. As he looked at a video message from his brother back on Earth, Maggie was watching and she began to mutate - becoming intrigued by the Earth's oceans. The infection was a water-borne entity known as the Flood.
Yuri had been destined to be killed when the base commander, Adelaide Brooke, triggered the self-destruct to prevent the Flood reaching home. However, the Doctor's intervention meant that he, Brooke and colleague Mia Bennett were saved, transported to Earth in the TARDIS.
