A young member of the Kinda tribe, from the planet of Deva Loka. She helped look after the old blind wise woman Panna, who dwelt in a cave at the heart of the forest. Both had the power of speech, whereas the rest of the tribe communicated telepathically only. Karuna could also read other people's feelings, which Panna could not.
The old woman wanted the sole female member of the expedition, Todd, to come and visit her in order to warn that an ancient evil - the Mara - threatened the Kinda. The Doctor accompanied Todd. After summoning visions of what might happen should the Mara be freed into this dimension, the strain killed Panna. However, her spirit transferred into Karuna, who took on some of her personality. She became the tribe's new wise woman.
