Service robot controlled by the L3 robot also known as Drathro. Both originated in Andromeda. It was housed in Drathro's underground base, built within the old London Underground station at Marble Arch. Drathro sent the L1 out of the base in search of the Doctor after he had escaped. Locating him at the nearby village belonging to the Tribe of the Free, it smashed through a stone wall to capture him. It travelled on caterpillar tracks, and was armed with retractable telescopic claws. It had a single camera lens for an eye, which could self-repair when damaged.
Queen Katryca, ruler of the Tribe, had her warriors attack and destroy the L1, mistaking it for Drathro.

- When Blue Peter did a feature on Season 23 it was revealed that Mike Ellis of the BBC VFX Department had helped construct the L1 and he was seen emerging from it in the studio. The item was presented by his daughter Janet Ellis, who had appeared in the series herself as Teka in The Horns of Nimon.
