General Kudlak was a highly decorated war hero of the Uvodni race. The Uvodni were involved in a lengthy war against the Malakh, and Kudlak had been sent to Earth to find new recruits for the fight. He had previously carried out this task on other planets. Using a laser tag-game company - Combat 3000 - as a front, where young people could demonstrate their fighting skills, he would abduct the winning contestants and ship them off to the war.
The teleportation caused weather anomalies which Sarah Jane Smith noticed, and she was able to connect them to the disappearances of the young people.
Her adopted son Luke and his friend Clyde Langer attended Combat 3000 one afternoon and were captured after reaching the top level of the game. Sarah and her friend Maria Jackson were able to force Kudlak's human accomplice - a human named Grantham - to send them to the Uvodni spaceship in orbit above the Earth.
It transpired that the war had actually been over for ten years, but Kudlak's commander - the Mistress - had failed to inform him. She was only a computer programme, unable to accept the war was over. Kudlak disabled her, and agreed to allow the captured youths to return to Earth. He then dedicated himself to tracking down the survivors who had been sent over the last decade.
