K is for... Kangs

All-female gang members from the Paradise Towers residential complex. They were split into three rival groupings, based on colour. The Yellow Kangs had been killed off, leaving only the Blue and Red factions.
They came about because all the young men and boys had been conscripted to fight in a war, and never returned.
Each colour competed against the other to capture their HQ - or "brain quarters", as they spoke a form of corrupted English. They had also adopted names gathered from aspects of urban living - like Bin Liner or Fire Escape.
Though armed, it was not the Red and Blue Kangs who had eliminated the Yellow. This had been due to the automated Cleaning Machines which were being controlled by a disembodied brain in the building's basement - that of Kroagnon, the Towers' architect.
The Doctor was able to unite the Kangs to fight this common enemy. They even joined forces with the Caretakers, who had always hunted them to punish them for their acts of vandalism and graffiti.
After the defeat of Kroagnon, the Kangs made the Doctor an honorary member - both Red and Blue.

Played by: Julie Brennon (Fire Escape), Annabel Yanusha (Bin Liner), Catherine Cusack (Blue Kang Leader), Nisha Nayar (Red Kang), Astra Sheridan (Yellow Kang). Appearances: Paradise Towers (1987).
  • Little about the Kangs makes sense. Everything points to them having evolved their culture over a long period of time, but where are the male children who were too young to go to war?
  • Julie Brennon was once married to Mark Strickson, who had played companion Turlough.
  • The Blue Kang Leader's name was given as Drinking Fountain in the novelisation.
