A super-computer encountered by the Doctor, Romana and K-9 on the planet Zeos. A being known as the Shadow, who was an agent of the Black Guardian, engineered a war between Zeos and its neighbour Atrios. The Shadow then wiped out the population of Zeos with a virus and employed a captive Time Lord named Drax to build Mentalis. It would co-ordinate the Zeon military forces and run the war automatically. It proved very successful, decimating the Atrian forces.
When K-9 arrived on Zeos, it located Mentalis and introduced the Doctor and Romana to it. They found that it had considerable defences. This included the instruction to destroy its own control centre in the event that someone tried to tamper with its core directives.
The Doctor realised that the destruction of Mentalis would trigger the devastation of the entire galactic sector. Mentalis deliberately stood down the Zeon forces to allow the Atrian Marshal to launch an attack which was designed to allow this to happen. Whilst in captivity in the Shadow's domain, the Doctor met Drax and learned more about the computer - including the means of disabling it.
