On This Day... 1st May

After a great start, The Space Museum started to slide downhill with its second episode The Dimensions of Time, which made its debut today in 1965.
The Master turned up half way through Colony In Space, whose fourth instalment was shown in 1971.
In 2010, the Eleventh Doctor, Amy and River Song defeated the Weeping Angels in Flesh and Stone.

Today we remember one of the series' most controversial figures. John Nathan-Turner was producer for the final eventful decade of Doctor Who. For every good decision he made, he probably made two wrong ones. He oversaw the casting of three Doctors and revamped the look and sound of the show, but he was also there when the series was placed on hiatus, and ultimately cancelled.
His first loves were light entertainment and soap opera, but he rubbed the BBC top brass up the wrong way and was never allowed to move on to this sort of show. Many fans would argue that he introduced too many of these elements into Doctor Who.
Frustrations with his faltering career led to alcohol issues, which ultimately contributed to his death. He passed away on this date in 2002, at the age of only 54.

Two others whom we lost on this day were actors Bernard Archard and George Pravda, who each made more than one appearance in the series.
Archard, who died in 2008 aged 91, featured in Power of the Daleks and Pyramids of Mars
Pravda, who died in 1985 aged 68, featured in The Enemy of the World, The Mutants and The Deadly Assassin.

On a brighter note, we can wish the latest incarnation of the Master - Sacha Dhawan - a very happy 38th birthday today. The highlight of Series 12, he'll be back in the BBC Centenary Special in October.
