K is for... Kelly, Gia

Gia Kelly was the chief scientist on the T-Mat travel system project. By the late 21st Century the human race was no longer interested in space exploration, and all travel across the globe was achieved by T-Mat - a transmat system which allowed people and goods to be instantaneously transported from one reception centre to another via a relay station housed in a base on the Moon. Some, like Professor Eldred, argued that the Earth was becoming over-reliant on T-Mat - and his fears became reality when problems arose at the Moonbase. Delays in the transport of food and medical supplies quickly led to severe shortages.
Kelly and her boss Commander Radnor knew that Eldred had secretly prepared an old rocket capable of reaching the Moon, and they went to visit the scientist to ask him to help. Here they met the Doctor and his companions Jamie and Zoe, who agreed to pilot the mission.
It transpired that the problems at the Moonbase were not technical. It had been invaded by Ice Warriors, lead by Commander Slaar. They intended to use the T-Mat as part of their conquest of Earth.
Unaware of the aliens, Gia travelled up to the Moonbase with some technicians when the system appeared to have corrected itself - against Radnor's instructions. Slaar had only allowed them to come here as he wanted someone to operate the system for him.
She was rescued by the Doctor and his companions and managed to get back to Earth. There she helped the Doctor draw the Ice Warrior invasion fleet into close orbit of the Sun by reprogramming a satellite that was originally going to handle limited T-Mat functions.
Once the Ice Warriors had been defeated, she continued to argue with Eldred over the respective merits of T-Mat and conventional rocket travel.
