Owner of the spaceship SS Pentallian, which she also captained, working alongside her husband Hal Korwin. Keen to save time and money on one of the ship's cargo runs through the Torajii System, McDonnell permitted an illegal solar scoop to take place. This was a rapid means of refuelling, whereby the craft collected material for fusion from a sun as it swept past.
Unfortunately for the Pentallian, the star which it extracted material from happened to be a sentient one, and it reacted violently to being attacked. Korwin became possessed by energy from the sun, his internal body heat rising to inhuman levels. He sabotaged the ship, causing it to begin to fall into the sun, and began killing its crew. The Doctor and his companion Martha Jones had arrived just before his transformation began.
Accepting responsibility for what had happened, McDonnell lured Korwin into an airlock then sacrificed herself to open the external door - both being sucked out into space.
