Giant flying insects of alien origin which had fallen through the Cardiff Rift. Specimens were obtained by a powerful pharmaceutical company - the Pharm - which was directed by Professor Aaron Copley. He experimented with a number of alien creatures, exploiting their biology to seek lucrative new drugs. The Mayflies - so called because of their brief lifespan like the terrestrial insects - provided a drug called Reset, which had the ability to undo illness - like resetting the human body to basic health.
Both UNIT and Torchwood were alerted to the Pharm's activities when seemingly healthy people died suddenly, with no obvious cause. Dr Martha Jones of UNIT joined Captain Jack's Cardiff team to investigate the deaths. They found that the victims - who included people with cured genetic ailments - had actually been murdered. Martha went into the company undercover as a potential test subject. Torchwood discovered that an assassin was killing the Reset test subjects. One survivor died when their body suddenly produced a swarm of Mayfly larvae. The assassin was killing people before this stage was reached. The drug had this fatal flaw, and Copley was trying to cover it up.
Dr Owen Harper was able to save Martha after she had been infected - before he was killed by Copley.
The professor was himself gunned down by Owen's colleagues, and the Pharm was shut down - all of the alien creatures euthanised.
