Senior salesman with the firm of Auto Plastics. He had helped develop a new doll and had embarked on a sales trip to the USA - only to find himself out of a job on his return. His boss, George Hibbert, had previously promised to make him Sales Director. He went to the factory to protest in person to Hibbert, but was told only that the firm was moving in a new direction. His old laboratory was now a high security area, out of bounds.
Suspicious, he decided to break into the factory later and made it into his old lab. It had strange machinery installed, and one wall was lined with crudely fashioned dummies. He was horrified to see one of these stir to life. Its hand dropped away to reveal a weapon, but he managed to flee. He was spotted by a man named Channing who had taken over the firm by mentally dominating Hibbert. Channing was actually an Auton replica, agent of the Nestene Consciousness which sought to invade the Earth.
Ransome was found by UNIT troops and taken to their HQ where he was interviewed by Brigadier Lethbridge Stewart and the Doctor. They decided to investigate the factory, taking Ransome with them but leaving him at their forward command post. His return to the area was detected by Hibbert, who sent an Auton to destroy him.

- Whilst he made small appearances in a number of TV series and films, Smee's real passion was for theatre work. He left his personal archive, detailing his 49 year stage career, to the Victoria & Albert Museum.
