On This Day... 18th January

The fifth episode of The Daleks - The Expedition - made its debut today in 1964.
Two Peter Davison stories made their debut. The first was Four To Doomsday, in 1982. This was the first story Peter Davison recorded. The other was Snakedance, in 1983, which was a speedy sequel to the previous season's Kinda.
As well as these new opening instalments, two other stories concluded with their fourth episodes today. These were The Krotons in 1968, and Robot in 1975.

Today's birthday of note is that of Christopher Hamilton Bidmead, who turns 81. He was Script Editor on the first JNT season (18). A lot of Warriors' Gate was down to him. He also wrote the stories Logopolis, Castrovalva and Frontios. Another story - "The Hollows of Time" - was scheduled for possible inclusion in Season 23 but it was ditched when they decided to start afresh with the trial arc. It would have seen the return of the Tractators, as well as including the Master.
Bidmead took on the Script Editor role only when he heard that he could inject more proper science in the series, and cut down on the perceived silliness of Season 17 (script edited by Douglas Adams, and featuring Tom Baker at his most unrestrained).
He always wanted his full name to appear in the credits of the programme but it was too long and they only used the initial "H".
Bidmead was an early champion of the home computer and still writes for computer technology publications.
