Patrick Troughton's third story - The Underwater Menace - got underway today in 1967.
The only other episode to debut on this day was Underworld Part Two, in 1978.
Two birthdays of note today - Adjoa Andoh turns 59. She played Martha Jones' mother Francine in Series 3 and 4, as well as the Catkind Sister Jatt in New Earth.
She shares a birthday with Jemma Redgrave, who is 57 today. She has played UNIT's Kate Stewart since Series 7's The Power of Three.
We also remember the writer Robert Banks Stewart, who wrote the classic Tom Baker stories Terror of the Zygons and The Seeds of Doom, as well as an unused draft called "Foe From The Future", which was to form the basis for The Talons of Weng-Chiang. He passed away on this date in 2016, aged 84.
Mark Jones who played the scientist Keeler, who is transformed into a Krynoid in Banks' The Seeds of Doom also passed way today in 2010, aged 70.
Another departure was the head of the BBC's VFX department, Jack Kine. He only ever had one Doctor Who credit (for The Mind Robber), but he lent his features for the poster of the Big Brother character in Inferno. He was 83 when he died in 2005.
Finally, actor Paul Whitsun-Jones was another who passed away on this date (in 1974, aged only 50). He played the Squire in The Smugglers, and the Marshal of Solos in The Mutants.
