On This Day... 16th January

The Romans got underway today with its first instalment - The Slave Traders - in 1964.
In 1971, Terror of the Autons moved on to its third episode.
In 2008, the second series of Torchwood began with Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, which introduced another time agent, Captain John Hart. The title derives from James Bond's Thunderball.

Today we remember the comic actor Peter Butterworth, best known for his many Carry On... appearances. He portrayed the Meddling Monk - the series' first ever recurring character, and the first of the rogue Time Lords - though that name was a long way off yet.
The Monk starred in The Time Meddler, then returned a few months later for episodes 8 - 10 of The Daleks' Master Plan.
Butterworth had been a POW during WWII, held at Stalag Luft III where the famous "wooden horse" escape had taken place. He went for a part in the movie of this event - only to be turned down as he didn't look right to play a POW.
Butterworth passed away on 16th January 1979, aged just 59.
