Clive Jones was the father of Martha Jones, companion to the Tenth Doctor. He recently split from his wife, Francine, after a long marriage and three children Letitia was the oldest, with Leo the youngest). Clive had fallen in love with a young woman named Annalise. Francine regarded her as a bit of a bimbo, and that her husband was trying to relive his lost youth. He had also bought himself a convertible sports car. A huge family fight took place around son Leo's 21st birthday party - which was the night when Martha first went travelling with the Doctor.
Like Francine, Clive was approached by agents of the politician Harold Saxon and asked to encourage his daughter to return home. Saxon was really the latest incarnation of the Master, and he intended to trap the Doctor through Martha. However, Clive realised that Saxon was up to no good, and tried to warn Martha to flee. Captured, Clive and his family were virtually enslaved by the Master on his airborne HQ - the Valiant. Attempts to escape and kill the Master all failed.
Eventually, the Doctor undid the temporal paradox which had allowed the Toclafane to take over the planet and enslave their own ancestors. Time was reversed, so that the previous year had never happened. However, having been at the centre of events, the memories remained for Clive and his family. These events helped him reconcile with Francine, and Martha elected to leave the TARDIS to help her parents cope with what they had experienced.
