9th October 1965 saw the broadcast of a unique Doctor Who story - Mission to the Unknown. Single episode stories are the standard these days, but this was the only single episode story of the classic era. It was also unique in being the only story which does not feature the Doctor, his companions, or the TARDIS.
It was also Verity Lambert's final story as producer.
It confused the hell out of people at the time, due to the lack of Doctor etc., but also because the following week saw the start of a story that had absolutely nothing to do with Daleks or space agents on the planet Kembel. Of course, we now know that the episode was basically a prequel episode for the forthcoming twelve part epic The Daleks' Master Plan.
Also on this day, in 1976, The Hand of Fear continued with its second episode.
While we're here, let's wish Brian Blessed a happy 85th birthday. He played King Yrcanos in The Trial of a Time Lord, but was also almost a Doctor himself.
