K is for... Kar

A young warrior woman from a Pictish tribe. When the Roman Ninth Legion attacked her lands, killing most of her tribe, she unleashed a savage monster to destroy the invaders. For generations her people had kept this creature under guard in a stone barrow where time moved at a different rate. A single warrior would be chosen to spend the rest of their life holding the creature at bay. Once Kar had released it, however, she had no control over it and it attacked and killed everyone it encountered, Pict or Roman.
The Doctor visited the region after companion Bill Potts expressed an interest in knowing what had happened to the Ninth Legion - which supposedly vanished without trace.
He identified the creature as alien, originating in a different dimension. It was merely the vanguard for a possible infestation of the creatures, which are susceptible to certain wavelengths of light, whilst feeding upon others.
Kar joined forces with a young Roman deserter named Verus and his friends. She and they, along with a handful of her people, entered the barrow and hold back the creatures after the Doctor lured the vanguard back inside. He had planned on doing this himself, but Kar felt responsible for its release in the first place and knew that it was her task to perform.
Kar's younger brother Ban was left to tell her tale for future generations, and it is said that all the crows learned to say her name.

Played by: Rebecca Benson. Appearances: The Eaters of Light (2017).
  • Thought to have been wiped out by the Picts in Scotland around 83 AD, the Legio IX Hispana is mentioned on an engraving from the Netherlands which post-dates their time in Scotland (c120 AD). They had certainly been disbanded, or wiped out, by the reign of the Emperor Septimius Severus (193 - 211 AD) when lists of current legions were recorded.
