First episodes of stories written by Terry Nation usually ended with the appearance of a Dalek at the cliff-hanger. It's never any surprise to the viewers, as the story often has "...of the Daleks" in its title. In Part One of Planet of the Daleks, which made its debut today in 1973, the Doctor was shocked to discover a Dalek at the cliff-hanger - despite the fact that he had specifically asked the Time Lords to send him after them in the previous episode!
In 2007 the Doctor and Martha were trying to unravel The Shakespeare Code. There wasn't actually any code to work out in the story - the title merely mimicking The Da Vinci Code.
Today we remember actor Tim Piggot-Smith, who featured twice in the series. One of his very first TV appearances was as the army captain in two episodes of The Claws of Axos, in 1971. He returned in 1976 in the more substantial role of Marco in The Masque of Mandragora. He passed away on this day in 2017, aged 70.
