M is for... Memory Worms

Foot-long maggot-like creatures of obscure origins, they secrete a substance which can be absorbed through the skin. This causes immediate loss of short-term memory for varying periods of time - depending on the strength of the dose or the physiology of the victim. The Sontaran Strax recovered after only a few minutes, whilst the Doctor and his associates who broke into the Bank of Karabraxos lost their memory for a period of hours or even days. The Doctor had set this up himself retrospectively, to conceal from himself his own involvement in its planning.
The substance could also be injected directly into the bloodstream by the worm's large fangs. Dr Walter Simeon was bitten and lost decades of memory. The Doctor had hidden the worm in a tin to smuggle it into Simeon's home. Unfortunately, this left him open to complete possession by the Great Intelligence.
The Doctor had originally intended to use the worm on this occasion to make Clara Oswald forget ever meeting him.

Appearances: The Snowmen (2012), Time Heist (2014).
