Tanya Lernov was a Russian crew member of the space station W3, known as "The Wheel". Her role was as an astrogator. She worked in the command centre, where she engaged in a relationship with Leo Ryan, who was second-in-command of the station.
She identified as man-made the signal coming from the derelict spacecraft Silver Carrier which had drifted into the neighbourhood of the Wheel, leading to the rescue of Jamie and the injured Doctor.
Like Leo and medic Gemma Corwyn, Tanya became alarmed at the mental deterioration of Commander Jarvis Bennett. She claimed to have an instinct - her "nose" - when trouble was brewing. This proved to be accurate, as the Wheel then came under attack by the Cybermen.
After the Doctor had been captured by his own people, his companions were to be sent back to the time when they first encountered him, though they would then be expected to live the life they would have led had they never entered the TARDIS. Zoe found herself back on the Wheel in the company of Tanya, with only a strange feeling that she had forgotten something.
Played by: Clare Jenkins. Appearances: The Wheel in Space (1968), The War Games (1969).
- The Target novelisation of The Wheel in Space, by Terrance Dicks, gives Lernov's role as astrologer rather than astrogator, which is clearly a mistake.
- Jenkins was invited back, and the Wheel corridor set rebuilt, for her brief reappearance at the conclusion of Part Ten of The War Games.
- She had previously played Nanina in The Savages.
- In a 1970 adaptation of Sir Walter Scott's Ivanhoe she was reunited with Eric Flynn, who had played Leo in The Wheel in Space.
