L is for... Lennox

 

A discredited scientist who was known to the Doctor's assistant Dr Liz Shaw. Eager for money, Dr Lennox agreed to work for General Carrington, head of security at the UK Space Agency. He was working on a scheme to trigger an interplanetary war by abducting a trio of alien ambassadors - representatives of a race who had killed his colleague on an earlier space mission. The death had been purely accidental, as the aliens thrived on high doses of radiation. It was Lennox's job to look after the ambassadors and keep them alive until Carrington was ready to make use of them.

Liz succeeded in convincing him to escape and go warn UNIT. Carrington had a spy in the organisation, however, and he was murdered in his cell through exposure to a deadly radioactive isotope.

• Second of four appearances by Shaps in the series. He had previously featured as archaeologist Viner in Tomb of the Cybermen, and would later play Professor Clegg in Planet of the Spiders, and the Archimandrite in The Androids of Tara.
