In the last 58 years, only one episode of Doctor Who has made its debut on December 4th - and that was back in 1965. The Traitors was the fourth part of The Daleks' Master Plan. This was no ordinary episode. It opened with the death of a companion - Katarina sacrificing herself to open an airlock outer door when she had been seized by the escaped convict Kirksen.
By the time the episode ended, we had also seen Bret Vyon gunned down. He had been just as much of a companion in the last four episodes as Steven and Katarina had been. Vyon was the first appearance in the programme of Nicholas Courtney, who would go on to play the Brigadier.
One of the actors who appeared in this episode - Maurice Browning - died on this date in 1983. Browning played Mavic Chen's scheming deputy Karlton.
