The second instalment of The Time Meddler, which made its debut today in 1965, was titled after the villain of the piece - The Meddling Monk. Captured and locked up at the end of the previous week, the Doctor was only heard briefly in this episode, shouting from his cell - thus allowing William Hartnell to have his latest holiday.
In 2009 Children of Earth reached its disturbing conclusion as Captain Jack sacrificed the life of his grandson to expel the 456 from Earth. The episode ended with Jack leaving Earth to sort himself out, leaving a pregnant Gwen Cooper the last remaining member of the Torchwood team.
The Doctor would come across Jack drowning his sorrows in an alien bar in The End of Time Part II.
Simm first played the character in the closing moments of Utopia, before featuring in The Sound of Drums / Last of the Time Lords. Whilst previous Masters had mad ideas, they weren't actually mad themselves - until this incarnation. The reason for this insanity was revealed when Simm returned in The End of Time Parts I & II. Rassilon had planted a never-ending drumbeat in his head.
Later on Missy arrived, and we assumed we had seen the last of the Simm incarnation - until World Enough and Time / The Doctor Falls brought the two incarnations together. There could only ever be one outcome from this - they both murdered each other.
