On This Day... 16th June

The Green Death arrived at its penultimate episode today in 1973.
In 2007, the Master returned at the climax of Utopia - first in the form of kindly old Professor Yana, and then in younger regenerated form. Yana was Sir Derek Jacobi, who had once voiced the Master in the animated Scream of the Shalka series. The new Master was John Simm. The episode also saw the return of John Barrowman as Captain Jack in the parent series, after his first year on Torchwood.

Today we wish Carole Ann Ford a very happy 82nd birthday. She was the original Doctor Who companion, playing the Doctor's granddaughter Susan. Frustrated at the lack of character development, Ford was the first to leave the show - in the concluding episode of The Dalek Invasion of Earth, which was the second story of Season 2. She has made one comeback - in The Five Doctors. Ford also featured as a housewife calling her children in to watch the Daleks on Doctor Who in the 50th Anniversary drama An Adventure in Space and Time.
She shares her birthday with Michael Kilgarrif, who turns 85 today. He played the Cyber-Controller in Tomb of the Cybermen and Attack of the Cybermen, an Ogron in Frontier in Space, and the K1 Robot in Robot.
Simon Williams - Group Captain Gilmore of Remembrance of the Daleks - also has a birthday. He is 76.

We also remember Eileen Way, who passed away on this date in 1994, aged 82. She appeared in the very first story as the 'Old Mother'. In 1966 she featured in the second of the Peter Cushing Dalek stories as one of the treacherous "women in the woods", who sell out Wyler and Susan to the Daleks.
In 1979 she returned to the series to portray the sadistic Madame Karela in The Creature from the Pit.
During the making of An Unearthly Child she bet William Hartnell that the series would not last the year. They never met again, so she never did pay him his money.
