However, I then read that the duo are:
“… filming scenes that are due to air in 2023 to coincide with the show’s 60th anniversary celebrations”.
This has got me thinking that it is either a mini episode such as The Night of the Doctor, or they are only featuring in a sequence which features within the overall 60th Anniversary story, like a flashback.
Russell T Davies is giving nothing away:
"They're back! And it looks impossible - first, we announce a new Doctor, and then an old Doctor, along with the wonderful Donna, what on earth is happening? Maybe this is a missing story. Or a parallel world. Or a dream, or a trick, or a flashback. The only thing I can confirm is that it’s going to be spectacular, as two of our greatest stars reunite for the battle of a lifetime".
RTD said last week that there would be no more news for a while about the 14th Doctor, reminding everyone that Jodie Whittaker still has her final story still to air, for the BBC's Centenary in October.
I can only assume that the reason this news has been released now is that Tennant and Tate are about to film their scenes this very week, possibly in a public location, which would have meant the news getting out unofficially anyway.
(It could also mean that they are not the only old Doctor / companion pairing we'll get to see - the others not featuring in a public location).
RTD said yesterday that Sundays were good days for making announcements - and so were Mondays...
Update: It's begun... Tennant and Tate seen filming at Camden Lock in London. Tennant in brown suit but with new dark blue overcoat.
