Patrick Troughton's penultimate story came to an end today in 1969, with Part Six of The Space Pirates.
Also ending, in 1975, was Genesis of the Daleks. Its sixth instalment saw the apparent demise of Davros at the plungers of his own creations.
Little did we know on this day in 2008 that we were seeing a future Doctor and a future companion. The Fires of Pompeii featured Karen Gillan in a minor role, heavily made-up as a soothsayer. The main guest artist was Peter Capaldi as pater familias Caecilius. The coincidence of his similarity to the Twelfth Doctor was built into The Girl Who Died, as the Doctor thought that he deliberately adopted Caecilius' features as a reminder that saving people was what he did.
Today we remember Gerald Flood, who portrayed the robotic companion Kamelion. Flood featured as King John in The King's Demons, although it transpired that this was Kamelion mimicking the monarch. Flood later voiced the robot in Planet of Fire and the regeneration sequence in The Caves of Androzani. Another appearance in The Awakening was deleted from the finished programme but exists as a DVD extra.
JNT asked Flood if he wanted a role in the programme after meeting him at a theatre in Brighton. JNT had gone there to sound out Colin Baker about taking over from Peter Davison.
Flood passed away on this date in 1989, aged 61.
