K is for... Kaftan

Kaftan was the consort of the logician Eric Klieg. Together they financed an archaeological expedition to the planet Telos to excavate the tombs of the Cybermen, who had disappeared from the galaxy 500 years before. Accompanying Kaftan was her hulking bodyguard Toberman.
Klieg intended to resurrect the Cybermen so that they would ally with his Brotherhood of Logicians, and impose their beliefs on the Earth - ideals which Kaftan shared. She had the stronger personality of the two - pushing him along and coming up with alternatives when his schemes let him down.
She had Toberman sabotage the expedition rocket, preventing them leaving the planet, and she attempted to kill Victoria Waterfield by switching on the Cyberman recharge machine whilst she was trapped inside it.
When Klieg descended to the tombs to awaken the Cybermen, Kaftan remained behind to make sure that no-one could hamper his work, drugging Victoria to prevent her interfering. She was overcome by a Cybermat, however, and Victoria alerted the rocket crew.
When it appeared that Klieg had failed, Kaftan was killed by the Cyber-Controller - shot with one of their weapons.

Played by: Shirley Cooklin. Appearances: Tomb of the Cybermen (1967).
  • Cooklin was the wife of Doctor Who's then producer Peter Bryant.
  • Frazer Hines had a habit of chatting up any passing female, and he tried it on with Cooklin when she had been made up as Kaftan, not realising who she was.
