F is for... Frank

Frank was a young drifter who had come to New York in 1930 seeking work, finding himself in the Hooverville homeless camp. He came from Tennessee originally. When businessman Mr Diagoras came to the camp looking for workers to unblock a sewer tunnel, the Doctor and Martha Jones volunteered. They had come there to investigate a number of disappearances of homeless people from Hooverville. When the camp's leader Solomon also volunteered, Frank was emboldened to join them. Once in the sewers, they realised that they had been sent into a trap. They were attacked by savage Pig-Men hybrids. Frank was captured by them. Later, Martha was also caught and reunited with him. They discovered that they were in the clutches of the Daleks - the Cult of Skaro - who had escaped to this time zone after the Battle of Canary Wharf in 2007. The Doctor helped everyone to escape, and Frank assisted in setting up defences in Hooverville for the expected Dalek attack to recapture the Doctor. He witnessed Solomon being cut down by one of the Cult. Frank then joined Martha and showgirl Tallulah, along with her part Pig-Man boyfriend Laszlo, in breaking into the Empire State Building beneath which the Daleks had their base. He then accompanied everyone to Tallulah's theatre, where the final showdown between the Doctor and the Daleks took place.
Once the Daleks had been defeated, Frank helped Laszlo find a refuge in Hooverville.

Played by: Andrew Garfield. Appearances: Daleks in Manhattan / Evolution of the Daleks (2007).
  • Garfield is just one of a number of young actors to have appeared in the series who has since gone on to become a major Hollywood star. His big break was landing the role of Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and its 2014 sequel.
